The essays presented in this book deal with a wide range of Knox County people. Some prominent. Most ordinary. Some achieved high rank. Some remained privates throughout the war. Most were men. A woman, who cared for "her boys" wounds and illnesses was the epitome of motherhood to many Union soldiers and ranked with Generals Grant and Sherman in their eyes. They were of many ethnic backgrounds. One thing that they had in common is that they all contributed to the successful conclusion of the war.
